Alex McCuaig wins ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the FX Design Awards 2016

London, Thursday 1st December 2016.  At the FX International Design Awards held in London last night, Alex McCuaig, founder and chairman of International experiential design company MET Studio, was presented with the top award for ‘Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Design’ in recognition of over 30 years of designing educational, cultural and immersive brand experiences.

On receiving the award McCuaig said: “To have been considered as a nominee for a lifetime achievement award was a genuine surprise and a real honour.  But to have won it, well I’m completely blown away. I guess your past is what others think you made of it”

Nominees for the shortlist – which included Sir Nicolas Serota, director of the Tate Galleries and Dame Julia Peyton-Jones, director of the Serpentine Gallery – were selected by a panel of industry experts and then voted for by the public.

Describing his time to date in the industry he said: “34 years of building MET Studio and the most surprising thing about those years is the places they took me, and the people and cultures I encountered on the way.”

“I recall sitting in the captains chair on the bridge of the QE2 as she sailed into Manhattan, and watching the early morning sunlight bouncing off the twin towers and filling the bridge with a golden glow, and a few months later standing under her hull at the bottom of a huge dry dock in a German shipyard where she sat on timber blocks waiting for her biggest refit planned and designed by MET Studio.

And will I ever forget photographing three narcotics bosses giving thanks for another successful deal in the tiny shrine of Jesus Malverde, their patron saint, whilst surrounded by policemen carrying pump shotguns and covered in black body armour that would not be out of place in a Batman movie. A crazy example of the lengths we went to design a drug addiction centre in a small Mexican town called Culiacan.”

McCuaig concluded: “To this day I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have worked and continue to work with so many extraordinary talented people who have helped contribute to the success of MET Studio. Success relies on a little luck, but mostly it comes from striving to be the very best that you can be for your colleagues and your clients, and I would say MET will continue to be defined in these terms.”

The annual FX Design Awards sets out to celebrate International design excellence, attracting entrants from across the world.
