Architecture and museography combine to create a journey

Client: The Energy and Technology National Museum, Mexico City
Service: Concept Design

Project Details

MET Studio, in collaboration with JSa Architects, were finalists in an international competition to design a new energy and technology museum in Mexico City as part of a planned renovation of the existing Mutec Museum.

We worked closely with the architect to ensure a harmonious concept was reached that created an architectural solution seamlessly integrated with a strong visitor journey and narrative.

We wanted to take the visitor on a journey through the energy cycle, beginning at the existing museum building. A large energy loop structure was created that took visitors below ground to learn about non-renewable energy technologies, and then back up above ground into the clouds to explore renewable energy. In the centre of the structure was a gallery that explored our everyday consumption of these two energy sources, and how our behavior is linked to the sustainability of our environment.

The project also looked to reconnect a segment of green land within Chapultepec Park to the city in order to create a green public space and a sense of community around the museum, meaning the people visiting were also explored as an energy source that gave life to the museum and the city.
