UK Pavilion at Shanghai Expo

Celebrating collaboration between the UK and China

Client: UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office
Service: Concept Design

Project Details

Successful Expo pavilions focus on big ideas or messages communicated to a group rather than to an individual, with group interaction and visitor flow key. MET Studio’s shortlisted concept for the UK Pavilion, in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects, aimed to communicate an intricate, layered message to a large audience in a short amount of time.

Our theme was the collaboration between Britain and China, with the two nations working in synchronicity with the elegance of a Chinese ribbon dance. The solution consisted two large, animated and moving LED ‘curtains’ snaking through the space and effectively dancing with each other.

This produced a building without walls, maximising the spatial footprint of the pavilion as visitors were able to pass beneath the two curtains. The movement and the progression of the story meant that the physical structure also acted as a wayfinding and flow device, guiding visitors from the entrance to the exit of the pavilion and processing the optimum number per hour.
